Meet Crystal Liu, M.A.

Hello! I’m a third-year PhD student in clinical psychology at American University and a clinical extern at MOAT! I’m very passionate about using evidence-based treatments to support individuals as they navigate their mental health journeys and move toward living more meaningful, fulfilling lives.

During my graduate training, I have worked with clients facing a wide range of concerns, including anxiety disorders, depression, emotion regulation difficulties, and interpersonal challenges. Across these experiences, I have been deeply committed to providing culturally responsive care and fostering an inclusive environment where every client feels heard and valued. Recognizing that starting therapy can feel intimidating, I strive to create a welcoming space that encourages open dialogue and collaboration.

At the forefront of my practice is cultivating a strong therapeutic alliance grounded in trust and rapport. I highly value adapting evidence-based therapies to align with each client’s unique needs, identities, and values. I also emphasize highlighting clients’ strengths and successes throughout the process, with the goal of empowering them to recognize their progress and build resilience.

Outside of my clinical work, I enjoy watching movies, reading, listening to true crime podcasts, and exploring DC. I also love rock climbing and yoga—though I like to think of myself as more enthusiastic than skilled! I grew up in California, spent some time in Georgia for undergrad, and now I’m a DC transplant exploring this city one neighborhood at a time!

I work under the supervision of Dr. Kevin Young and currently see clients located in Maryland and Virginia.
